HantsWeb Awards 2008 - Winners

That's right, having made it down from the initial 65 nominations to the final three, we were today crowned "Best Sport Website" at the HantsWeb Awards 2008 ceremony in Winchester!!

Our category was judged by none other than Meridian & Sky TV presenter Andy Steggall, who remarked afterwards that whilst the other websites in contention were probably more technically proficient (and obviously had considerable funding behind them), ours was the only site that really "made him smile". A testament not only to this website itself, but also to the spirit and sense of community that pervades our club.

So most importantly, a third piece of 'silverware' to add to the Jossy's trophy cabinet! We were in fact rewarded handsomely with not only the above trophy and certificate, but also a shiny new Dell Vostro laptop, and (wait for it...) two executive box seats at White Hart Lane for Spurs vs Pompey in January!! Now that'll be feisty affair...

Thanks for helping to make this website great!

You can view the shortlists HERE (we are in the 'Sports' category)

The were no fewer than 65 nominations for the Sports category alone, so for us to have made the shortlist of 10 is a significant achievement in itself! The judges will now select three finalists from each category, to be announced in early October. Watch this space!

* JOSSY'S GIANTS 3 - 3 THE ECHO *
Under new management and after a successful pre-season becoming league and tournament champions in the JD 5-a-side league in Eastleigh, we began our 11-a-side campaign with a friendly against The Echo, who boasted a number of Saturday League players. We welcomed a few new faces including Steve, Smarty, Dustin and Lewis. It also marked the return of Jossys bald hero, Mark Gleeson. The match started a bit scrappy with both teams struggling to keep possession and getting lost in the long grass. Not long into the game, The Echo scored after reacting quicker to a loose ball after a bit of a goalmouth scramble. Within five minutes of the restart, some great link up play with Lewis left Smarty to slot home his first goal for the club with a neat finish into the bottom corner. We started to pass the ball around with a bit more confidence and second goal soon followed with Lewis beating the keeper to the ball and completing a tidy finish to make it 2-1 heading into half time. Manager and master tactician Mike Douglas brought himself on for the second half and tinkered with the formation to move from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2. This opened up the midfield and we started to create chances with some decent passing from box to box. Within ten minutes the scores were levelled though after Steve was harshly adjudged to have fouled an Echo player as he ran into the box. The man in the middle with the luminous yellow top gave the penalty and Reesy's limp wrist could not stop the pen from going in to make it 2-2. For the next twenty minutes we really opened up their defence as Ian made some great runs to meet through balls from Steve and Rich, who were linking up well down the left. Mark and Dustin continued to dominate the midfield with strong tackling and distribution. We then went 3-2 up after a defence splitting pass from Rich which met Mike's run and in a one-on-one, Mike coolly chipped the ball over the keeper's head and into the empty net. With four minutes remaining though a long ball fell to an Echo striker, who lobbed Reesy (for a change) and the game ended 3-3, which both teams could take a lot of positives from. The defensive unit of Gibbo, Bowyer, Dan G, Ting and Steve looked strong. I may as well mention Bowyer cleared one off the line, and celebrated for the next five minutes! In midfield, we played some fast attacking football on a big pitch, although one negative point was Dan Platt trying a backheel which was embarrassing for everyone involved. Up front, despite using four different strikers throughout the game, we constantly troubled their defence with good runs, pace (mainly from Smarty!) and some clever passing. All in all, a great start to the new season and if we can sign up the trialists we could be in for a far better season than last. Plus, with experienced/old midfielder Jamie, prolific striker Dicko, heart-throb Simmo, Woody and potentially the world's hairiest man (Jazzman) returning to the squad, things are looking up.

Thursday April 24th

Jossy's Giants FC is now under new management!

Our thanks to the 'old guys' who have invested so much time and effort, hopefully we can continue taking the club forwards. The new managerial structure is as follows:

Mike Douglas - Chairman
Andy Furness - Club Secretary
Ian Rees - Treasurer

There will be a few changes to match and signing-on fees to cover increased admin expenses, all of which will be detailed in the coming weeks. We have new players joining the club this season who should improve our squad from last year, and three pre-season friendlies to blend the team will be arranged for August/September. We will be sorting out signing-on and end of season voting forms shortly...
